1849 $5 Mormon AU 53
Beautiful Territorial rarity! The Mormons liked gold and silver…and they still do! So after the California gold discovery, Brigham Young arranged for gold to be sent to Salt Lake City from California so a Mint could make gold coins. At the time, there was a draught of circulating coins, throughout the entire country, and there was a lot of hoarding of gold and silver. Consequently, numerous private mints were opened to serve the commerce needs of the country, especially the Western states. Today, most Territorial gold coins are rarities that are highly coveted by serious collectors. The Mormon gold coins have a special place in private gold history and they are all rare in all grades. This beautiful Mormon $5 is very close to Uncirculated and has great eye appeal. A tremendous gold rarity.
