Description
A spectacular type example! This is a great (and rare) variety….the 1851 date was struck over an 1881 date (Mint’s engraving error). In general, we don’t deal in Large cent varieties (a little too esoteric). However, we bought this one for its spectacular quality and we didn’t pay a premium for the variety, nor are we pricing it at a premium. It is an incredible type example, with the variety as a “bonus”. The grade is appropriate as it is mark-free and very well struck. The color designation is too conservative as there is a good deal of original Red showing…and both the Red and Brown color are a glowing iridescent. The eye appeal is fantastic. Kind of has to be seen to be believed. We have no idea how a coin like this could have survived in this condition for 171 years
