A spectacular Gem! The Mint didn’t start marketing proof coins until 1858. So all the pre-1858 proof coins were struck in extremely limited quantities. The 1840 half cent is no exception. As few as 20 to 30 may have been struck. We are pretty sure that less than 30 survive today. This is the finest we’ve ever seen. In fact, it’s one of the finest of the type we have ever see. It is a gorgeous proof 66 with glowing rich brown color. The devices are somewhat Cameo and this beauty is perhaps slightly undergraded. It has phenomenal eye appeal. A Superb Gem proof half cent…WOW!
