One of the most amazing Large cents we’ve ever handled! This coin is the highest PCGS graded 1831 Large cent (of any and all varieties). The pedigree of this amazing coin fits its importance. It first appeared on the market in Lester Merkin’s sale of the famous Helfenstein Large cent collection in August, 1964. It then resided in the R.E. Naftzger collection (the greatest Large cent collection in history). From there it went to the Brent Pogue collection (The greatest early Federal coin collection (1792-1840) ever assembled). Both Naftzger and Pogue were brilliant numismatists who were extremely fussy about quality. This absolute jewel has perfect mark-free surfaces and an abundance of original Red color showing. For us it was one of those “some coins just have to be bought”. The often repeated saying is “there is no Santa Claus in numismatics”. Well, we got really lucky on this one. At the Pogue auction in March, 2017, this coin brought $105,750
