A rare coin market icon and a total Gem! The three legged Buffalo Nickel is one of the icons of the rare coin market. It is a Mint error in which one of the legs of the Buffalo does not show. Since it is a substantial and quite obvious error it became famous shortly after the year of issue as collectors searched change to try and find them. Some did “escape” into circulation so it was possible (if unlikely) to find this valuable coin in change. But this was a limited issue and it is rare (and valuable) in all grades. Because there are only a small number that were “made” and almost all of them went into circulation, three legged Buffalos are really rare in Mint State and extremely rare in Gem condition. This is a monster Gem with no major marks. The strike is super sharp with full detail of braid, tail, and horn. The luster and eye appeal are spectacular. So this is Gem example of one of the most famous U.S. rare coins.
