Description

Superb Golden Gem! In the late 1870’s, the country was still in an economic slow-down following a Depression caused by the so-called “Crime of ’73”. For the Mint, there was very little demand for lower denomination coins, so mintages for quarters and half dollars were very low from 1879 to 1890. For example, there were 8,304,000 Philadelphia half dollars struck in 1877, but the mintage for the 1879 half dollar was a mere 4800 coins. This is actually one of the lowest mintages of all United States silver coins. They 1879 half dollar is a truly rare coin in even the lowest grades. It is estimated that only 200 to 300 coins survive today in all grades. This Superb Gem is about as Gemmy as Liberty Seated half dollars…of any date…gets. The surfaces are mark-free and perfectly clean, the strike is totally full and the luster is iridescent under beautiful blue light golden toning. A gorgeous example of a truly rare coin!
