Description

A spectacular Seated half! Liberty Seated half dollars are one of the classics of the 19th Century silver type coin market…and one of the most beautiful. Interestingly, fifty cents was considered a lot of money at the time, so most people collected pennies and nickels. Not a lot of Seated halves were saved in any grade, and Gem uncirculated specimens are truly rare today. And add to that the fact the fact that the 1879 to 1890 issues are extremely low mintages and this is a really special coin. There were only 12,001 halves minted in 1888, as opposed to the more “regular” mintage of 1. 3 million in 1878. So the 1888 is a very rare coin in all grades, with very few survivors. As you might imagine, Gems are really rare. This is one of the finest known as in 36 years, PCGS has only graded eight examples MS67 and none have ever been graded higher. This amazing Gem has super clean, mark-free surfaces, a perfect razor sharp strike. And thick white frosty luster. This is not only the finest 1888 half dollar we have ever seen, it’s one of the nicest Liberty Seated half dollars we have ever handled!
