1874-CC T$1 MS 65
Talk about special coins! Any Trade dollar is an important coin. The commercial strikes were minted from 1973 to 1878. The proofs were minted from 1873 to 1885. So this is a short-lived series. Though short-lived, these are among the beautiful coins ever minted anywhere at any time. They are long term rare coin icons. In terms of quality, most Trade dollars were shipped to the Orient for trade purposes. And they got pretty beat up so Gems are really rare. In 36 years, PCGS has graded 15,466 Trade dollars. Of those, only 223 have been graded MS65 or higher, a mere 1.4% of the total graded. Add to the importance of Trade dollars and their condition rarity the fact that this is a Carson City Mint issue, and a Gem MS65! The Carson City Mint is perhaps our most famous and all issues are highly desirable. And because the coins were spent by the silver miners and not saved, most Carson City coins are rare in all grades. And for Trade dollars, you can multiply that factor since not very many were made at Carson City. Gem CC Mint Trade dollars are off-the-charts rare. For the 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876, 1877, and 1878 CC Trade dollars, in 36 years, PCGS has only graded 10 examples MS65 and four coins MS66…14 total MS65 or better…about one every two and a half years. This 1874 Carson City is a super frosty Gem. The surfaces are clean and the strike is bold. The luster is extremely frosty…pure white and really glowing. The first CC Mint Tarde dollar we’ve had in several years.
