Virtual perfection…WOW! Gold dollars and $20 gold pieces were introduced in 1849 to take advantage of the vast quantities of gold being delivered East from the California Gold Rush. The gold dollar the smallest denomination U.S. gold coin and was minted from 1849 to 1889. In the early days, i.e. just prior to and during the Civil War, there was a need for circulating coinage and the gold dollar was a real workhorse, often used in every day change…if you can imagine that! Consequently, most gold dollars from this era show extensive wear. There were three distinct types of gold dollars. For the 1849-1854 “Type One”, in 36 years, PCGS has graded 23,706 examples. Of those only 53 (only 0.002%) have been graded MS67 or better. These beautiful forms of concentrated wealth are just really hard to acquire in Superb Gem condition. This spectacular Gem has mark-free virtually perfect surfaces. The strike is razor sharp and the luster kind of glows in the dark. An amazing gold dollar!
