1854-D G$1 AU 53
Incredible rarity! The Mint in Dalonega, Georgia was opened after a gold discovery there in 1828. The Mint Made Gold dollars, $2.5 coins, one Three dollar piece (1854), and $5 pieces between 1838 and when the Mint had to shut down due to the Civil War in 1861. Collecting Dalonega gold has been popular for at least 100 years. Most of the dates had very low mintages and poor strikes. Consequently, all dates are rare today and there are some classic rare dates. There is also some regional chauvinism driving demand for these gold rarities. The 1854-D gold dollar is a major rarity. Here’s what expert David Akers said about it in his thoroughly researched book: “One of the rarest of all D Mint gold dollars, and only the 1856-D and 1861-D had fewer auction appearances in our 192 catalogue sample.“ The 1854-D gold dollar has a super low mintage of only 2935 coins. There are only several dozen survivors today in all grades. This Almost Uncirculated 53 is a very high grade for this issue. And the quality is exceptional. The strike is actually perfect, and the luster is bright and fresh. A great rarity in fantastic condition.
