1879 $3 MS 65
|Category:||Three Dollar (1854-1889)|
Ultra low mintage, semi-prooflike Gem! In the 1860s and 1870s, commerce in this country was somewhat stifled by the Civil War and its aftermath. And more than commerce, very few gold and silver coins circulated. For the odd denominations such as the three cent silver and $3 gold piece, mintages were very low, as these coins were neither popular nor needed in commerce. For the 1879 $3 gold piece, only 3000 coins were originally minted. Think about that…it’s just 250 coins a month from the Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints combined. The banks didn’t order coins and the people didn’t want them. Today, the 1879 is a rare coin in all grades, and very rare in Gem condition. This is a spectacular Gem with semi-proof like surfaces and light Cameo devices. The color and luster are glow-in-the-dark iridescent. An amazing three-dollar gold piece!
