Spectacular Eye Appeal for this All-Time Classic! At the time…late 1870s…international commerce was very important and the dream was a universally recognized coin, preferably gold. The $4 “Stella” was a pattern for such a coin. The coin never came to be, but about 400 1879 “Flowing Hair” design examples were struck and given to dignitaries in Washington DC. Though the years, the $4 gold Stella has been one of the most desirable gold coin rarities. The reasons for the popularity and strong collector demand are probably the great story of the purpose for the coin, the extreme beauty of the design, and the great nickname (“Stella”). This is a spectacular specimen. The surfaces are clean and mark-free. The color is a rich deep “orange-peel” gold. To be frank, many of the graded Gems look too bright and have probably been cleaned or played with. But this is a totally original, deep gold Gem. We have been trying to buy a Gem for nearly a year, but until this beauty came along, we never saw a Stella we really believed in. This is magnificent Gem example of one of the most famous U.S. gold coin rarities
