Description

Gorgeous Matte proof! After minting brilliant proofs for nearly 100 years, in 1908 the U.S. Mint started to experiment with different finishes, in some ways emulating what foreign Mints were doing. In 1908 and from 1911 to 1915, the gold proofs had a “Matte” or sandblast-like finish. The Matte proof gold coins were not very popular at the time of issue, and some were just spent during the Depression. So along with relatively low initial mintages, the Matte proof gold coins have very low survival rates, especially in top grades. This specimen is a beautiful, near perfect Gem….a true 20th Century gold rarity
