Description

A spectacular Full Head Gem! We had great coin designs during the first half of the 20th Century …all-time classics…the Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime, Walking Liberty half dollar, and Standing Liberty quarter. These series are representative of the aesthetic high point of U. S. coin design. Standing Liberty quarters were only minted from 1916 to 1930. It quickly became an avidly collected series. This beautiful coin design had a peculiar characteristic in its striking…for some reason, the head of Ms. Liberty is often weakly struck. Indeed, many sophisticated collectors started to insist that their coins have sharply struck heads. And certain issues were much rarer with fully struck heads than others. Actually, all Standing Liberty quarters are rarer with fully struck heads. In 38 years, PCGS has graded 29,867 Standing Liberty quarters. But of those, just 11,755 had full heads…about one in three. And as might be expected, prices for full heads were at a premium to non-full heads. And also, while Gems with fully struck heads are desired by the serious collectors of the series, they are also a highly desirable 20th Century silver type coins. This 1928 Philadelphia, besides having a totally fully struck head,…is also mark-free and highly lustrous…a near Perfect MS67 with a Full Head!!! To give you an idea of the importance of this ultra grade…the price record for this issue at auction is $120,000 in August, 2021. This is a spectacular, stunning example of this issue…probably the finest known!
