Description

An extreme early proof rarity! Pre-1858 proofs are rare as the Mint didn't start marketing proof coins to collectors until 1858. Pre-1840 proofs are ultra rare. For the 1836 Half Dollar, only 10 coins were originally minted. And it is estimated that 6 to 10 survive today. We think this estimate is on the high side as we have only seen a couple in the past 40 years or so. Proof Capped Bust Halves (1820 to 1839, there are no pre-1820 proofs) are all ultra rare. In fact, in both of our numismatic careers (over 100 years total) we have only handled five proof Bust Halves of any date. The surfaces of this beautiful rarity are fully mirrored under typical golden toning. The strike as a proof is of course way stronger than a commercial strike and features razor sharp detail of the eagle's feathers and claws. This is a truly rare coin.
