Description

Without exception, every regular issue proof gold coin dated 1879 is an important rarity. Only 30 proofs of each denomination were coined, and few of these survive today. Auction records suggest that the proof gold dollars are not as rare as the larger denomination pieces, although many deceptive first strike coins exist, and some of those have been called proofs in the past. Both proofs and business strikes were produced from the same die pair, creating further confusion in proper identification. However, there is no doubt about the proof status of this beauty. It displays amazing Cameo contrast with brilliant yellow-gold luster on the devices and deeply mirrored fields. In fact, this is the finest known example! It is the only piece certified by PCGS as PR67 Deep Cameo (with CAC designation), with no finer examples.
